Visions, Claire Boucher’s third album as Grimes since 2010 is a headtrip through musical styles of the past 30 years. Drawing inspiration equally from synth-pop, R&B, electro and ambient, it’s as likely to whip up misty chill-out tracks like “Skin” as it is to go for the pop jugular on “Genesis” and “Oblivion.” The varied stylistic range is held together by Boucher’s unique voice, which she layers, loops, and processes into a unique instrument all her own. Fans of everything from The Postal Service to Brian Eno will find something to love about Grimes’ fearless, progressive approach to music making. – Mike Nigro
